On the Phonemic Status of Labial Approximants in Dutch

چکیده

In Dutch, the phonological relation between the labiodental spirant approximant [ʋ], found in word-initial position, and the labial–velar semi-vowel [w], found in word-final position, has been a subject of interest for several scholars. Most of them agree that these two sounds should be regarded as allophonic variants of the phoneme /ʋ/. This assumption, however, has never been tested empirically, and the supposed allophonic realizations have never been acoustically measured. The present thesis provides solid empirical evidence that the assumed status of [w] and [ʋ] as allophones of the same phoneme in Dutch is, at the very least, debatable. An acoustic analysis performed on intervocalic clusters, on the one side, and on the two intervocalic coda and onset “control” conditions, on the other, shows that the cluster should actually be regarded as a perfect, plain sequence of coda [w] and onset [ʋ]: it never degeminates, as it would be expected, instead, if coda [w] and onset [ʋ] were the same phoneme. The parameters measured in the acoustic analysis are: duration, F2 (average F2 and F2 rise), intensity (average intensity and intensity fall), and harmonicity (average harmonicity and harmonicity fall).

The purpose of this article is to determine the phonemic status of [h] and [ʔ] in the Sistani dialect of Miyankangi. Auditory tests applied to the relevant data show that [ʔ] occurs mainly in word-initial position, where it stands in free variation with Ø. The only place where [h] is heard is in Arabic and Persian loanwords, and only in the pronunciation of some speakers who are educated and/or...

British English [kw], [k], and [w] distinction in back round vowel contexts

Corpus data from the Audio British National Corpus was used to compare the acoustics of British English stops with velar and/or labial articulation in onset positions preceding back rounded vowels. The acoustics of labialized velar stops in British English have not commonly been described due to their frequent phonological analysis as clusters. Labialized velars have been characterized cross-li...

Automatic Phonemic Labeling and Segmentation of Spoken Dutch

The CGN corpus (Oostdijk, 2000) (Corpus Gesproken Nederlands/Corpus Spoken Dutch) is a large speech corpus of contemporary Dutch as spoken in Belgium (3.3 million words) and in the Netherlands (5.6 million words). Due to its size, manual phonemic annotation was limited to 10% of the data and automatic systems were used to complement this data. This paper describes the automatic generation of th...
